About Course

In this course, you will learn how to create a new map using QGIS. You’ll start by setting up a new QGIS project, adding and managing spatial layers, and styling them with appropriate symbology. You’ll also get a practical introduction to QGIS plugins, including the QMS plugin for adding base maps.

Course Content

Setting up your QGIS Project
Learn how to create a new QGIS project with a solid foundation. You’ll organize lesson folders, understand project files and properties, and correctly set your coordinate reference system (CRS). You’ll also explore the QGIS interface — panels, toolbars, and project defaults — to prepare for efficient map creation.

Styling Layers in QGIS
Discover multiple ways to add and organize spatial data. You’ll use both the Data Source Manager and the Browser Panel to load layers, and learn how to control visibility and properties through the Layers Panel.

Labelling Features
Learn how to add informative and dynamic labels to your map layers. You’ll explore both the Layer Properties and the Layer Styling Panel, and work with QGIS expressions for advanced labels — including word wrapping, combining multiple fields, and displaying area or coordinates.

Plugins
Expand QGIS’s power using plugins. You’ll learn what plugins are, how to install and manage them, and explore useful examples like the QMS Plugin for base maps and the Geolocation tools for positioning and navigation.
